History of the
Company
Humboldt Electric has a rich history in the
electrical trade, starting from modest beginnings over 40 years
ago to grow into Saskatchewan's leading commercial electrical
contractor. Today the company employs up to 100 people in peak
periods, and has a fleet of over 20 trucks serving the entire
province.
From modest beginnings
The company was founded in 1966 by husband and wife team Bob and
Shirley McConnell. And as the name suggests, Bob McConnell chose
the small town of Humboldt to set up shop.
While Bob bid for and completed jobs, Shirley
ran the office and kept a watchful eye on eight-month-old Darren
as he amused himself in his playpen. Little did they know at the
time that young Darren would eventually take over the company,
allowing Bob and Shirley to get in some playtime of their own.
Bob attributes much of the company's success
to the natural resources of Saskatchewan - the loyalty of the
people, their resourcefulness and hard work, and the incredible
team spirit. The company grew steadily in the town of Humboldt
for 15 years. Bob found the town's business climate and people
to be very helpful. Potash and the mining industry were being
developed nearby and this provided a lot of good-sized contracts
for the young company.
Making the move to Saskatoon
By 1980, Humboldt Electric was bidding on more and more work in
Saskatoon and area and decided it was time to move the company
into the city. Many of the employees also moved with the company,
a testament to the great work environment created by the McConnells.
Even when the economy slows down, Humboldt Electric
doesn't believe in laying off employees, knowing full well that
the people will give back to the company in busy times. To foster
this positive team attitude, the company created the position
of Social Club President whose mission is to organize events that
bring everyone together.
Growing for the future
It was always Bob McConnell's belief that a company should be
founded on good relationships - with employees, suppliers, other
tradespeople, and even competitors. Current company president,
Darren McConnell has echoed that sentiment, building on his father's
foundation to move Humboldt Electric forward into the age of fiber
optics, data links, and highly complex jobs.
If the past is any indication, Humboldt Electric
will continue to grow and succeed as a leading electrical contractor
who delivers quality work across the province. Recent signature
projects for the company include the Canadian Light Source facility
in Saskatoon (commonly called the Synchrotron), the Saskatoon
Airport expansion, and the new SIAST Wascana Campus in Regina.
